Edale and Kinder's Southern Edge
Grindsbrook Clough cuts dramatically into Kinder's southern slopes. This valley is the first taste of rugged scenery for walkers on the Pennine Way as they head north.
Snow and mist: looking down into Edale from Kinder's rugged southern edge.
A patch of sunlight momentarily glows on Edale's northern slopes, whilst morning mist hangs over the Great Ridge.
Sunrise over the Great Ridge, from Edale...
...and, later, over Win Hill from Ringing Roger on Kinder Scout.

The Great Ridge bounds Edale to the South, and marks the transition between the gritstone moors and the limestone hills. The ridge itself is different again, consisting of shale. Lose Hill, pictured here, stands at its eastern end.
Looking westward, down into Edale. ___________________________________________________
As you descend from Kinder Scout into Edale, the scenery gradually becomes greener, softer and less hostile. Once you've taken the old path, Jacob's Ladder, down the steep slopes of Edale Head, trees begin to reappear, and then fields, and at last the first few farms and houses. The river Noe also begins its journey here, before flowing eastwards through the Vales of Edale and Hope, finally joining the Derwent in the shadow of Win Hill.
Another view of Edale's western head.
