(new improved version with a better word sample:
less proper nouns, Latin words and so on.)
This is essentially just a statistical tool. The Calculator contains
a sample of over 16000 words and phrases, drawn originally from
a list of eight times that number.
You have to assess
a reduced sample (a minimum of a hundred words) which should take
about five minutes. Continue beyond this to improve the validity
of the estimate.
[Read more about
the vocabulary calculator (how to use it, how reliable it is, how
it works etc.) here.
Also, you can download
the original word list (with 132208 entries) as a zipped Excel spreadsheet
here.
It could be useful for all sorts of things!]
Results can be obtained for three
categories:
A - Understood- Words you fully know and understand.
B- Inferred- Words of which you can deduce the meaning, despite having
never heard them.
C - Familiar
- Words that you remember hearing, but cannot define yourself.
(Of course, there is nothing
whatsoever to stop you from defining the categories differently.)
Off you go then!
